Kaste’s Story – Home of Heroes Cambodia

Kaste’s Story

Kaste is a female Belgian Malinois dog, born in Bosnia on 27th October 2006. She was donated to Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) from the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and arrived in Cambodia on 21st January 2007 to spend her working life at the CMAC Dog Center in Kampong Chhnang Province.

Mrs Ouk Ratha was assigned to be Kaste’s instructor and after both physical and technical skills training, Kaste became a short leash mine detection dog. Kaste passed all her tests and went onto advanced training with another handler, Mrs Bin Sophanna who she went on to work with in the field. Together, they made an amazing team searching for unexploded ordinances and landmines in the Banteay Meanchey Province.

Ten Years In The Field

After working in the field for almost ten years, Kaste made huge achievements for humanity. She cleared a total area of 1,267,478 square meters and found the following unexploded ordinances and landmines:

Total anti-personnel mines found: 25

Total UXOs found: 36

Kaste received rabies vaccinations and deworming/parasite treatments her whole working life and received a few minor injuries and illnesses. On the 2nd May 2017, her trainers found a tumor on one of her teats. She was sent to the NPA clinic in SIem Reap for examination and operation, but after the tests were taken, it was agreed that surgery was too risky due to her old age and retirement was the best option.

Since her time with Home of Heroes, Kaste has received treatments for her cancers and is doing well. Now she is 12 years old, Kaste is enjoying her retirement, and we can’t wait to build her the world’s first dedicated retirement home she has been so instrumental in creating.
