A Dallas-based recruiting firm has filed a lawsuit against the Texas Rangers alleging the team is illegally monopolizing the baseball recruiting market in the state.

The suit, filed Friday in Dallas County District Court, asserts the Rangers are the only major league team that has exclusive negotiating rights with high school baseball recruits and that all other teams are barred by state law from hiring the recruits’ teachers.

The lawsuit, filed by recruiting firms Bay Area Starbase and Premier Edge Sports, seeks $1 billion in damages.

“For more than 50 years, Texas law has prohibited the employment of a baseball coach by a team in the same league as the coach’s student-athlete,” the complaint states.

“During that time, the Texas Rangers have monopolized the baseball recruiting market in Texas.”

The Rangers said in a statement that the lawsuit is without merit.

“It is patently false to claim that the Rangers have had exclusive recruiting rights to the state of Texas. These claims are false and we are confident that the courts will rule in our favor,” the Rangers said in the statement.

The lawsuit claims that Texas has an anti-monopoly statute that prohibits a business from “practicing or conspiring to practice any monopoly, whether by agreement, combination or conspiracy” to reduce competition and fix prices. The complaint says the anti-monopoly law prohibits the sale of recruiting rights to a team in the same league as the student-athlete.

The lawsuit cites the anti-monopoly statute and argues that other major league teams are denied exclusive recruiting rights to high school baseball recruits. The lawsuit is signed by Mark Matthews, a lawyer in Maryland, who is not affiliated with the lawsuit, but the law firm that represents Bay Area Starbase, Matthews, Matthews & Hull, P.C.

“A major league team’s exclusive right to recruit players from the state of Texas has been prohibited by the State of Texas for over 60 years,” the lawsuit states. “The teams’ monopoly in recruiting is also a conspiracy to deprive other teams of the same exclusive right.”
