AutoCAD’s capabilities are extensive, including the ability to draw, edit, and modify design and construction documents as well as 2D and 3D drawings. AutoCAD LT is a free, limited-feature edition of the full-featured software, while AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Architecture LT, and AutoCAD LT Architecture are standalone, one-feature-only versions of AutoCAD’s Architecture and LT Architecture features.
Autodesk has sold AutoCAD since 1983 and annual sales reached $1.2 billion in 2012. The company also offers a cloud-based mobile and web-based platform for AutoCAD in addition to a cloud-based integrated products platform.
Autodesk AutoCAD Architecture
AutoCAD Architecture is an architectural visualization and design program. Released in 1998, the software is priced at $1,299.99 for the desktop edition, $1,199.99 for the mobile edition, and $399.99 for the education edition.
The architecture program covers design of three-dimensional buildings, and is compatible with AutoCAD LT. Architecture is also integrated with the Revit software, and is bundled with Revit Architecture and Revit MEP.
The 2016 release of AutoCAD Architecture introduces “Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) integration.” This allows users to send and open CAD files in any web browser, through the Internet or a local network. The software also now supports the Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) protocol, which allows CAD files to be opened from Microsoft Access databases. AutoCAD Architecture is also available as a mobile app for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets.
Autodesk AutoCAD Architectural LT
Autodesk AutoCAD Architectural LT is a limited-function, desktop version of the full-function AutoCAD LT architecture package, which was released in 1996. Architectural LT can create, edit, view, and print 2D and 3D drawings, while architecture-specific capabilities are limited to basic drawing tools. Architectural LT is priced at $699.99 and runs on Windows.
AutoCAD Architecture LT includes a website and a mobile app. These tools allow users to integrate architectural documents into a company website, or to view a company’s architecture documents from a mobile device.
The mobile app allows users to view and annotate drawings and rotate, navigate, and zoom into a design. Document information, including
AVR is a software system that allows direct editing of the source data of 3D surface models exported from free and proprietary CAD systems, including Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit, Delcam and others. This is possible due to the use of the library used to process the 3D models, and its ability to process the 3D files which is not limited to the types of 3D-CAD models previously exported. AVR’s library allows for direct manipulation of coordinates and other data points, which can be transferred to any other CAD system.
CAD and CAM systems
There are a number of CAD/CAM and related technologies, including:
Algor® 1P is an architectural programming language used to program the Algor® 1P Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system.
AutoCAD is a software package originally developed by Autodesk for creation of 2D and 3D vector and raster graphics.
Architecture/Interiors is a software package created by Autodesk to provide architecture, construction, building, interior design and 3D visualisation software.
AutoCAD Architecture (see also Building information modelling) is a version of AutoCAD specifically targeted to architectural design, BIM, construction and interior design. It is used in the following applications:
Autodesk Project Architect
Autodesk Building Design Suite
Autodesk HDS (Design Studio)
AutoCAD Architecture is also available as a stand-alone product.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a general term for the use of computer-aided techniques for the modeling, documentation, analysis, and management of data pertaining to the construction, renovation, and maintenance of real estate and non-residential buildings, such as schools, hospitals, and office buildings. It is based on the concept of a three-dimensional model.
AutoCAD Civil 3D is a software package (part of the Autodesk Civil 3D suite) intended for design and construction of civil infrastructure, such as bridges, tunnels, highways, buildings, dams, and power stations.
AutoCAD Electrical is an electrical design and building information modeling software package.
AutoCAD Plant 3D was discontinued.
Delcam is a CAM and sheet metal software package.
AutoCAD Architecture and Autodesk Revit are closed source.
Autodesk MAYA and Autodesk 3ds Max are commercial 3

Drawing Tools – Revit Support:
Autodesk Revit 2017 is now fully supported in AutoCAD 2023. One of the most common integrations on a design team, the Revit functionality in AutoCAD is used to insert walls, doors, and other structural components.

Grid and Object Snap
Use the revamped grid object to view and position objects, and snap object to the grid for precision drawing. Or, choose the new snap object to quickly create perfect 90 and 45 degree angles.
Drafting & Management – DraftSet and Drafting Planner:
Create Drafting Plans, plans and drawings from the latest advancements in CAD technology. A built-in tool set helps you create and review drawings.
The new Drafting Set tool set gives you more tools to create intelligent and efficient building plans. A set of draft tools for entire building set help you create a plan, model, and run a design review, all in a single click.
The Drafting Planner includes tools to create and manage building and site plans. It also provides the ability to produce accurate, detailed model geometry. The planner can be integrated with the Drafting Set tool set for an extensive set of drafting tools. (video: 1:21 min.)
A dedicated tool set in the Drafting technology area includes design tools for calculating building and site area, as well as creating and setting building and site models.
Architectural Graphic Standards (AGS)
AutoCAD 2020 and AutoCAD 2023 introduce architectural graphic standards, which provide specific guidance for how architectural drawings should be represented in print and digital media. The AGS standard includes a comprehensive set of standards that will help architects, designers, and drafters produce professional drawings.
Additionally, there are now the following standards in the AGS area:
