The first desktop versions of AutoCAD could create two-dimensional (2D) drawing geometry and diagrams on a separate display called the “paper space”, overlaying the screen display used to view the various design objects. With the introduction of AutoCAD R14, it became possible to import geometric 2D and 3D data into the design space for computer-aided design, and to create or manipulate this data on screen. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are used primarily in the field of 2D drafting and technical illustration. AutoCAD LT can also be used for parametric modelling, engineering and architectural design.
A listing of some prominent users and projects is available on the CAD market analysis website, statista.com.
A 2011 survey found that 18% of the U.S. population has some level of experience with AutoCAD, 1% has used the software at least once, and 0.1% has used it regularly. The software is popular in India and throughout Latin America. It has also become popular among young people in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
AutoCAD was developed by computer engineer Mark Overmeer and Mark Kaelin, two employees of Ashton-Tate. The company’s success led to the first release of Autodesk Inventor, a design and modeling toolkit that combined the functionality of AutoCAD with the user interface of a 3D modeling tool. It was licensed by AutoDesk, Inc. and was available in the personal computer market.
AutoCAD was originally named AutoAlign, and the first version was released in 1982. Overmeer and Kaelin named it after a patented term developed in their own workplace to describe the “exact vertical alignment of parts with respect to each other” during the drafting process.
Three-dimensional (3D) interfaces were introduced in AutoCAD LT 1.5. In the mid 1990s, the last major version of the 2D CAD was launched. This was AutoCAD R12. This release introduced a file format that included the ability to import and export 3D objects. The 3D features were in AutoCAD since its inception, but it took the company nine years to include the 3D functionality and to provide a more complete 3D release. The first edition of AutoCAD was released in September 1982 as an add-on to BASIC for personal computers. It
The extensibility of AutoCAD was widely used in many computer-aided design (CAD) software packages such as 3D Studio Max. These include:
AutoCAD LT: For use with older AutoCAD products.
AutoCAD Map 3D: For use with AutoCAD 2006 and later.
3D Studio Max: This has an add-on of its own called 3D Studio Max
In the same manner, Autodesk FormIt is a complete package of geometrical modeling tools for use with AutoCAD 2007.

On March 27th, 2019, the FBI took over an investigation of hundreds of corrupt police officers, drug dealers, and politicians in St. Louis, Missouri. The corruption was revealed in a secret recording of a St. Louis City Police captain discussing the practice of framing civilians for crimes and the coverup of the crimes themselves. The FBI confiscated and destroyed the hard drives of all of the corrupt police officers, making the recorded audio file of the conversation with the corrupt officer the only evidence of the conspiracy.
On April 2nd, 2019, the indictment was unsealed with the charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice in the case against 3 City of St. Louis Police officers and 7 other defendants.
The Prosecuting Attorney has not stated the name of the officers and could have done so before the indictment was unsealed. It was possible to identify the officer by his face, his voice, and his clothing in the video. There are two officers, one who is a sergeant, the other a lieutenant. The officers who are charged could have used their position in the police department to attempt to protect the suspect. This investigation will be completed shortly, but some may be out of a job and some others will be receiving some type of lenient sentence. We do not yet know if any of the arrests have been made.

Receive and add feedback in real-time, from the AutoCAD® software. The feedback you receive is context-aware, which means it automatically updates based on the current state of your design. (video: 1:29 min.)
Work with multiple applications at the same time. When you import Markup Assist data from an external application, you can work with AutoCAD and the external application simultaneously. This allows you to leave your external application and still create accurate and efficient drawings in AutoCAD. (video: 1:30 min.)

New 2D drawing Commands
Selecting objects using the default selection method (click and drag) is sometimes inefficient, especially for larger documents. For example, you might want to select the first and last object in a drawing. Instead of having to draw a selection box around all objects, simply select a bounding box and use the new Insert Line command. It also can be faster to insert a line of a specific length rather than a line of indefinite length (what you get by default).
The new Insert Line command is a faster way to select objects for insertion and/or insertion of new objects. You can also use this command to add a line to an existing, selected object (e.g. lines). You can select and add multiple objects by clicking and dragging them.
This feature enables you to extend existing layers and connect layers that have been added to the drawing. This is helpful if you want to extend a layer that was created using other means, such as an existing.dwg file. To extend a layer, draw the extension line within the existing object. The extension line is oriented horizontally.
Layer comps can be edited and reused in many ways. When you extend a layer, you add multiple layers, each with a unique symbol (folder). All the layers are the same size and shape, but they can be positioned in different parts of the drawing. The new layers can also be moved and/or scaled.
You can now view layer comps in a new feature called “View Layer Comp and Symbol Labels.” This feature shows a list of the most recently added symbols with a thumbnail for each. This list is scrollable.
